New UK availability of O-Man ? the most profitable dairy bull in the world18 August 2009
This week’s publication of the new bull proofs by DairyCo breeding+ saw the remarkable O-Bee Manfred Justice (otherwise known as O-Man) reinforce his position as ‘the most profitable dairy bull in the world’.
As the number one Profitable Lifetime Index (PLI) bull, he builds on an exceptional six years during which he has remained in the top five for this index - most of this time in the number one position.
Inevitably, O-Man has been keenly sought around the world and semen supplies to each country, including the UK, have been strictly limited.
But this month sees a change in that position, as Dairy Daughters have secured extra supplies of O-Man which are being made available to British producers at a highly competitive rate.
“We’re absolutely delighted to have secured these supplies,” says Dairy Daughters managing director Evans Drayton. “We have always had to compete with the huge home market in the USA and a large international demand, but the difficult situation for the US dairy industry as well as the weakness of the dollar have worked in our favour.”
Semen will be priced at £40 which is said to reflect the company’s policy of passing any cost-savings back to the customer.
“Other companies have often hiked up prices as soon as a bull does really well, but we would rather reward our loyal customers with a good deal,” says Mr Drayton.
Commenting on the bull’s performance he adds: “O-Man is a truly remarkable bull, whose performance - as the sire of seven of the top 10 PLI bulls - is unprecedented in the dairy industry.
“He is the highest Profitable Lifetime Index bull ever, and he performs equally well on a variety of countries’ national indexes, where he also ranks number one including in Holland and Germany.
“But it is in his excellent performance for health and welfare without compromise to milk production where his greatest value lies,” adds Mr Drayton. “His daughters are exactly the type required by the modern dairy producer and independent breeding specialists have highlighted him as the bull for ‘every farmer interested in profit’.”
He now has 700 daughters milking in the UK and many thousand world-wide, and Predicted Transmitting Abilities (PTAs) which feature 734kg milk, 33.6kg fat and 29.6kg protein as well as improvements in cell count (-21), fertility (+2.5), feet and legs (+1.15) and lifespan (+0.6). His PLI is a phenomenal £286.
